Sylvan S5 Extreme Twin

Sylvan’s popular S5 has long been one of my favourites to drive. It handles well, is manufactured for smooth, fast rides and just looks good.

Last year I was able to test a mostly experimental S5 with twin 250-hp outboards. It was the first go at doubling up the power. It was a beast, but a little too raw to be considered a realistic option for most boaters.

I can confidently say the R&D team nailed the 2017 version.

The Extreme Twin version of the S5 is smooth and comfortable at any speed, thanks to the black, painted RPT tubes and heavy hat under structure—even at a top speed of 52 miles per hour. Acceleration is where this has a true “wow” factor.

Before you slam the throttles down you better make sure everyone on board is seated securely because this thing goes like nothing I’ve ever driven. Whether it be a standing holeshot or a mid-range boost you’re looking for, you’ll find it as soon as you ask for it.

Should you want a more traditional single engine option, that will save you a few bucks, but take away some of the punch.

On board, this looks like any other S5 except for the dual throttles and high-performance looking dash with Yamaha Command Link displays. The exterior rail lines are unique and feature coloured stripe accents—blue accenting white on our test boat.

There are twins all over this boat: twin bow benches that also work as forward facing loungers with flip-down armrests for those holeshots, twin high-back captain’s chairs mid ship, twin rear-facing loungers and twin jump-seat style mini benches behind the stern rail.

With those twin Yamahas set far back, the centre is extended and the swim platform is absolutely massive with a steps and extension ladder into the water. Of course you’ll need to force your self to not drive this S5 to make use of that which may be difficult to do!
