2011 Yamaha VXR HO
From our 2011 Test issue
By Matt Spencer
Yamaha’s VX series is its most popular line for good reason. They offer a balance of performance, fuel efficiency and features at an affordable price. But those looking for muscle craft performance had to jump a few models up – that is, until now.
The VXR HO is one of two white-knuckle performance models Yamaha has introduced to its VX series for 2011. Dishing out serious power without a serious price tag, both are rally car inspired, incorporating a high-performance motor in a stripped down, lightweight package. Combine Yamaha’s 1.8-litre motor, the industry’s largest displacement motor for a PWC, with the lightweight NanoXcell hull and you’ve got a power-to-weight combination that you just have to see.
On the outside, the VXR HO features stylish, flowing lines with an aggressive stance and front hood, befitting of a muscle craft. There is also a boarding ladder, wide side decks, dual concave mirrors and a race-inspired bolstered seat that really does make a huge difference during those aggressive turns. Speaking of turns, the sponsons have been adjusted to be a little more aggressive for a sportier ride.
Yamaha classifies this machine as a muscle craft – and, believe me, it is! Coming out of the water like a rocket, the power doesn’t stop until your eyes water and you’re smiling ear to ear. But it’s still nimble, agile and responsive. You can spin around, bury the nose and power it back through to do it all over again. All you have to do is let the engine do the work and hang on for the ride.
Never once did it try to toss me or act out of character. Even at its top speed of 67 mph, there was no fear, just exhilaration and an urge to go faster. And the cruising speeds? Who really cares with this flat out speed machine!
I’ve always liked the VX line, but felt it was missing a little something. Well, it has been found in the new VXR High Output. It’s fresh and sporty with incredible handling and performance that I can’t stop smiling about.
