Are You a Great Boating Neighbour?

Be mindful of those around you and respectful of the environment

Canadians love to spend time on the water. There’s truly no better way to enjoy a warm summer’s day! But the water is for everyone to enjoy, so it’s imperative that we exercise safe, responsible and respectful boating practices to ensure good times are had by all.

First, get your Pleasure Craft Operator’s Card (PCOC) from an accredited Boating Safety Course provider and remember to carry it with you. Those who still need the card should be aware that Transport Canada has implemented changes, which include the mandatory completion of a three-hour study guide (online) and more exam questions. The good news? If you can’t attend a course, you can now take the online exam anywhere, even in the comfort of your own home. The bad news? If you operate a power boat without your PCOC, you face a $250 fine.

Once you’re out on the water, observe some “soft rules” to be a good boating neighbour. Here are a few suggestions on how to deal with situations that may arise.
