The best way to the perfect pull, pass after pass

By Jake Thomas

With spring just around the corner, water sports enthusiasts will soon be coming out of hibernation, taking to the water by the masses. With people scattered across the waterways, giving some thought to the boat path ahead of time can result in a better experience for everyone.

As with most towsports, a straight and level line is best because it’s safer and easier to drive while making both sides of the wake the same shape and size. For best results, shift passengers around so the boat is balanced and drive a perfectly straight line – even the slightest turn can cause irregularities behind the boat.

Every body of water is different and therefore commands a unique driving pattern. Provided you have the space, the best pattern is a long straight line followed by a complete 180-degree turn or “keyhole,” which takes the boat approximately 45 degrees away from the line then doubles back so the boat ends up down the original path. This pattern ensures wakes are always headed in the same direction on the lake, away from the boat path. The skier will thank you because the water will remain flat, consistent and controllable pass after pass. In rough and open water, this pattern will also help to generate a calm body of water for each and every pass. Just make sure the skier knows the turn style so they are in the right place at the right time.
