Know Before You Go
Plan ahead for smooth sailing outside of Canada
By Brian Minton
Over the years, I have been astounded by the number of cruising boaters who are happier sitting tied at the marina dock every summer weekend than heading out to drop the hook at a favourite anchorage or explore some of Canada’s many waterways. This is not to say I don’t understand the various reasons behind this decision. But as my wife and I are happy wanderers ourselves, it seems counterintuitive to me to have a boat and not want to travel!
As such, it may not be surprising that our hearts are set on eventually heading out on a dream trip – completing the Great Loop. As yet, our very busy lives and demanding jobs have kept us relatively close to home in our cruising life, but we will one day join the many others who have endeavoured on this trip of a lifetime. Of that I am absolutely certain. And it will likely be sooner than later.
So, I have already begun to set my mind to the task of planning and preparations. Not necessarily to tackle it all now, but to always have an ear to the ground for tips and advice, and any developments that may affect my travels outside of home waters.
