World-famous Italian powerboat designer, engineer, builder and record setter Fabio Buzzi died in a boat crash on September 17, 2019, near Venice, Italy. At the time, Buzzi was attempting to break the offshore speed record from Monte Carlo to Venice. Near the finish line at Lido di Venezia, the 76-year-old’s boat hit an artificial reef. It is reported that the 10-time world powerboat champion was travelling about 92 mph.
The boat took off and flew 30 meters (almost 100 feet) through the air, landing on its stern on the other side of the causeway, where the victims died on impact.An official at Venice’s port authority, according to the Times of London.
Fabio Buzzi founded Fabio Buzzi Design in 1971 and his company’s boats won 55 world championships and set 43 world speed records. In 2019, Buzzi’s firm helped develop the performance day boat, Sunseeker Hawk 38.
